City Sketching Solutions is an online collection of short, focused mini–masterclasses designed to help you navigate the real challenges we all encounter in urban sketching. Each lesson addresses a specific problem—textures that feel overwhelming, washes that don’t match the drawing, awkward empty spaces in the view—and offers practical, simple tools to solve them.
These sessions are meant to support your creative process, whether you’re sketching on location or working from photos at home. You’ll find approachable exercises, clear demonstrations, and ideas you can apply immediately to make your city sketches feel more balanced, expressive, and uniquely your own.
Textures in Urban Sketching
In this mini-masterclass, we explore how textures bring depth, presence, and life into your sketches. Instead of avoiding detailed surfaces, we break them down through small swatches and mixed-media play—turning textures from something overwhelming into an enjoyable part of the process.
Balancing Loose Washes with Detailed Drawing
This lesson focuses on combining two contrasting approaches: the freshness of loose wet-on-wet washes and the precision of detailed line and color work. By separating the two modes first and studying them individually, we learn how to bring them together into a harmonious, dynamic urban sketch.
Smart Composition Fixes
Urban views often include empty or uninteresting gaps between the elements we want to sketch. Here, we practice gently “editing reality” by bringing important objects closer together. Instead of copying the scene exactly, we recompose it—using fountains, sculptures, figures, or rooftops as flexible building blocks to create a stronger, more intentional sketch.
